Sleep Apnea… Is This Nightmare Hiding In YOUR Closet?

Sleep Apnea… Is This Nightmare Hiding In YOUR Closet?

Many people suffer from this serious sleep NIGHTMARE without even knowing it… Are you one of them?

TYPES OF SLEEP APNEA

There are two main kinds of sleep apneas, giving rise to three types of sufferers from this condition:

1. Central sleep apnea (CSA) – a lack of respiratory support caused by a central nervous system disorder. Probably best to go to your doctor if you have any reason to believe you might have CSA. Nothing on this website can help with treatment of this kind of disorder.

It is best to talk to a doctor!

2. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) – a blockage of the sleeper’s air passages during sleep

3. And a hybrid of both central and obstructive sleep apnea – combining the two.

CSA is rare–present in fewer than 1% of cases. Hybrid forms account for about 15%  of cases. The vast majority of cases (84-99%) are primarily caused by OSA, when your air passages are obstructed during sleep.

Whipping OSA is what this website is all about!
Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea closes your breathing passages!

CAUSES OF OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA

OSA is caused by sagging of the tissue in the throat, of the nasal passages, and/or of the epiglottis, and/or of the tongue, and/or the esophagus itself. The condition is worse if you fall into any combination of the following categories:

  • You are male.
  • You are over 40.
  • You have a neck that’s bigger than 16″ in diameter.
  • You are overweight.
  • You drink alcohol.
  • You sleep on your back.
Just because you don’t fall into any of these categories doesn’t mean you don’t have sleep apnea!

This condition affects older men most, but women and children can also suffer from OSA.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU HAVE OSA?

Common physical symptoms this Nightmare has include:

  • Daytime fatigue,
  • Slower reaction time, and
  • Vision problems.

Behavioral symptoms that can help you identify this Nightmare:

  • Moodiness,
  • Belligerence,
  • Decreased attentiveness, and
  • Decreased drive.

In acute cases, these behaviors can lead to the Depression monster.

Besides these qualitative symptoms, sleep doctors usually want measurable results from a formal sleep study, called a polysomnography. Because the field of medical sleep studies is new, doctors don’t yet have commonly agreed criteria for what apnea is. One definition includes a minimum 10 second interval between breaths, combined with either a neurological shift in EEG frequency or a blood oxygen desaturation of 3–4% or greater, or both. Oxygen levels in blood go down because oxygen to the lungs is blocked multiple times until gasping wakes the sleeper and restores the oxygen levels. This can happen hundreds of times per night without the sleeper being conscious of the problem. He or she may awaken exhausted without knowing why. The problem of course is that he or she cannot enter deep REM (rapid eye movement) sleep stages necessary to a “good night’s rest”.

In the next post, we’ll look into what problems this Nightmare can cause. 8-) Look out!
